Peanut butter dog treats

Who doesn’t love peanut butter? That creamy, nutty flavour is delicious, I love it and my girls do too. If you’re looking for a homemade peanut butter dog treat recipe, this recipe is a crowd pleaser at my place. They’re easy to make, you only need four ingredients which you’ll most likely have in the pantry, they’re quick to bake and your house will be left smelling A-MA-ZING!

Can dogs eat peanut butter?

We all know most dogs love peanut butter, but is it bad for them? Generally speaking, natural peanut butter eaten in moderation should be fine as long as you check the ingredients. Some peanut butter contains unhealthy ingredients that can harm your dog, like xylitol which is an artificial sweetener which is extremely toxic for dogs. They can also contain a high amount of sugar and salt. It’s best to look for natural unsalted peanut butter which is made from 100% peanuts. I like to buy Sanitarium peanut butter which you can purchase from Coles or Wollies. Natural peanut butter is a good source of protein, vitamin B, E and healthy fat for your dog.

Personalised dog cookie cutters? Yes please!

If you’d like to order a personalised cutter for your dog, you can purchase one here. They’re also a great gift for your dog’s friends that have everything.

Peanut butter biscuit recipe

If you’re wondering how to make dog treats, it’s really easy with this recipe. Simply mix, roll, cut and bake – easy-peasy. I’ve used crunchy peanut butter in this recipe, but you could also use smooth peanut butter.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup peanut butter*

  • 1 egg

  • 1 ½ cups whole wheat flour

  • ¼ cup water (or bone broth for extra flavor)

*Peanut butter can contain xylitol which is an artificial sweetener which is extremely toxic for dogs. They can also contain a high amount of sugar and salt. It’s best to look for natural unsalted peanut butter which is made from 100% peanuts. I buy Sanitarium peanut butter.

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 170°C and line two trays with baking paper

  • In a medium mixing bowl, beat the peanut butter and egg until combined

  • Add whole wheat flour and water, beat until a dough forms

  • Sprinkle the bench with whole wheat flour

  • Knead dough until combined, add more flour if it’s too sticky

  • Roll the dough out to a 5mm thickness

  • Using a cookie cutter, cut out the biscuits and place them on the lined baking trays (no need to place them too far apart as they won’t spread in the oven)

  • Bake for 30 mins or until brown around the edges

  • Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack before serving one to your dog to taste test

And there you have it, a Soda and Poppy approved recipe for peanut butter dog biscuits. They tell me they’re the perfect treat for any time of the day. I actually put one on their bed every night when I tuck them in, it’s just like the chocolate treat you get on your pillow at fancy hotels. This recipe makes 50 small biscuits using my bone-shaped cookie cutters which are 7.5cm x 4cm.

If you have a peanut butter loving dog, give this recipe a go. I’m sure your dog will give it two paws up!

Note: Dog treats should be given in moderation. It’s recommended you consult your vet before introducing new food to your dog’s diet especially if you have a dog with a health condition.
