Dehydrated chicken jerky strips

Mmmmm chicken jerky anyone? I must admit shrivelled up chicken doesn’t look appealing to me, but my dogs go nuts over it. I like to make these chicken dogs treats myself so I know exactly what I’m feeding my girls. Unlike packaged treats, I know the treats I make don’t contain any artificial flavours, colours or preservatives and I use good quality skinless Lilydale chicken breasts.

Chicken breast is packed with protein for strong muscles and bones, and the chewy texture of the chicken jerky promotes healthy teeth and gums.

I make my chicken jerky treats in a dehydrator I purchased from Coles a couple of years ago. I love it, my only regret is buying a round one. Because it’s round it has a circular air vent through the centre of it, which means when I make dog treats using silicone moulds I have to cut the silicone to fit the circular trays. I would recommend buying a square dehydrator like this one. Dehydrators are such a great investment, not only can you make dog treats, you can also make human treats, like dried fruit and yogurt roll-ups – delicious!

Dehydrated chicken jerky strips recipe

This recipe is so, so easy to make and you only need a few ingredients. You can simply use one ingredient; chicken, or you can add a few dog friendly herbs and spices to create a few different flavours of jerky. In this recipe, I’ve flavoured the chicken with 3 different herbs and spices; turmeric, dried parsley and ground ginger.

Ingredients

  • 500g chicken breast (I buy chicken breast that has already been sliced into stir-fry strips)

  • Turmeric

  • Dried parsley

  • Ground ginger

Instructions

  • Rinse chicken breasts and trim off any visible fat

  • Slice chicken breasts into 4cm width strips (or if you’re like me and you don’t like touching raw meat, you can buy chicken breasts already sliced into strips)

  • Sprinkle a pinch of turmeric over a third of the strips, a pinch of dried parsley over a third of the strips and a pinch of ground ginger over the remaining strips. Rub the herbs and spices into the chicken strips with your finger

  • Arrange chicken strips on the dehydrator trays

  • Set the dehydrator to 70 degrees

  • Dehydrate for approx. 10 hours. Double check your chicken strips are super crispy. If they’re a bit squishy, leave them in the dehydrator until they’re firm.

Once your chicken strips have cooled, remove them from the dehydrator and store them in an air-tight container. Don’t forget to let your dogs taste-test them!

Note: Dog treats should be given in moderation. It’s recommended you consult your vet before introducing new food to your dog’s diet especially if you have a dog with a health condition.
