Tommy & Bella dog collar review

When Soda was just a few months old, I got her first puppy collar with an ID tag. Shortly after, I took her to my parents’ place for a family BBQ. As we all enjoyed the sun on the deck, Soda started panicking-her ID tag had dangled through the deck where she was sunbaking and gotten stuck. She couldn’t stand up and was crying and thrashing about. It took three of us to hold her still and undo her collar. I was upset because she was crying, and in her distress, she did a nervous poo on my sister. It wasn’t a fun time for anyone, so the next day, I was on a hunt for a new collar.

This was back in 2021. The next day, I had a puppy play date with a friend who also had a Cavoodle. She had just bought her dog a Tommy & Bella dog collar. I had seen these collars a lot at the dog park and on dogs I follow on Insta. I tried her dog’s collar on Soda and tested it outside on my deck. The ID tag didn’t get stuck. I was sold. The collars aren’t cheap, but fortunately, Tommy & Bella had a 25% off Black Friday sale, yay! Soda and Poppy have both worn Tommy & Bella collars ever since.

Product features

What I love about these collars is that they’re stylish and made of leather, so they’re durable. Soda has worn the same collar for six years now, and Poppy for four years. You can personalise the collar (and why wouldn’t you) with the first letter of your dog’s name, which will be printed on a leather tag that dangles from the collar. Under that tag, you can choose the shape of the metal ID tag (eg heart, paw print, star, arch), which will have your dog’s full name, your name, and contact number engraved on it. Having two similar looking dogs, I can’t tell you how many times people (including my family) have relied on looking at the initials on the girls’ collars to work out who’s who, haha!

The collars come in eight different colours, and are made of textured leather, featuring hand stitching, gold-plated metal hardware, an adjustable buckle and a D ring for attaching your dog lead to. Tommy & Bella also sell matching leather leads and treat bags, so you can buy the complete set.

I’ve had a couple of issues with the girls’ collars, and the customer service team has been amazing. Once, Poppy had a sleepover at Nan and Pa’s, and she came home with a broken clasp on her ID tag (see below). I’m not sure how it happened, and I was prepared to pay for a new clasp, but the customer service team insisted on sending me a free replacement and even offered me a more robust clasp. They also sent me a new set of ID tags, which I wasn’t expecting.

I had a similar issue with Soda’s collar. When she was a pup, she would pull a lot on the lead, which caused the D ring to start pulling away from the leather. I sent a photo to Tommy & Bella, and they replaced the entire collar.

We love these collars! In fact, I have my eye on the Maroon - Pink collar, which I plan to buy for the girls’ birthdays later this year. They not cheap, however they’re made of genuine leather, which means they’re durable, and the girls’ collars have lasted for years. Also Tommy & Bella is an Australian business; their products are designed in Australia and made overseas, so it’s nice to support a local small business.

Tommy & Bella have some great sales. They recently had a Mother’s Day sale with 25% off dog collars, so I’m hoping they have another sale before the end of the year so I can get a great deal. And if you sign up to their mailing list, they’ll give you 10% off your first order.
