Kmart dog bed review

Dog beds come in all different shapes and sizes, so it can be a bit overwhelming for first time dog owners to decide on the perfect bed for their dog. If your dog is anything like my two, they sleep A LOT - so I have three different types of dog beds scattered around the house. I have a Lexi & Me dog bed next to my couch. I have a water resistant Kmart dog bed on my deck and I also have a bean bag bed my Mum made which the girls sleep in overnight.

Kmart dog beds my dogs have tested

Kmart dog beds are great! They’re cheap, and even though they might not last long - depending on how big and rough your dog is, they’re a great value first dog bed. When you first pick up your dog you have no idea what type of dog bed will suit them, and often with puppies you don’t know how big they’ll grow! So buying a cheaper dog bed at first will help you decide what type of dog bed to invest in later on.

My dogs have tested the following four Kmart dogs beds. Here are my thoughts on each.

Kmart round dog bed

When I was getting ready for the arrival of my first dog, I was so excited. I dashed out to Kmart to buy all the essentials. Faced with a wall of all different types of dog beds, I settled on Kmart’s round dog bed. It looked liked the perfect size for a small cavoodle, and it was so soft - perfect for snuggling.

I thought with the raised rim and the soft plush material, this bed would act like a calming bed for my pup, but I was so wrong. Soda, even as a small puppy would lift up her bed and carry it, or should I say, fling it around the house and chase it. Her bed soon became her favourite toy to play with! She’d chew her bed and constantly dig in the center of it until she’d torn through the material and pulled out the stuffing.

Another thing I didn’t like about this dog bed was that it didn’t have a removable cover. It was small enough to fit into the washing machine, however it held a lot of water so it took a long time to dry.

Overall I wasn’t very impressed with this Kmart dog bed. I soon became tired of constantly having to sew it up so I got rid of it.

She looks cute, but she destroyed this bed!

Kmart water resistant dog bed

I’ve had my Kmart water resistant dog bed for 5 years now. When I bought it it was black, it’s faded over the years, but other than that it’s still going strong. I keep this dog bed on my undercover deck, so it’s doesn’t get much direct rain, but when it does get wet, the water just slides right off.

I love the water resistant material the bed is made of. It’s robust and scratch resistant, which is great for Soda’s obsession of digging in her beds. The material doesn’t smell, and it’s easy to remove the cover, wash it and zip it back on. This bed has memory foam on the inside which has held it’s shape well over time. I bought the large size of this dog bed and it comfortably fits both of my cavoodles.

I highly recommend this bed.

Kmart plush rectangular dog bed

I haven’t bought the Kmart plush rectangular dog bed, however when I was dog sitting Bruno the Beagle, my girls got to test out his bed. This bed is topped with a layer of soft material and it’s extremely thick and cushioning. You can see in the photos below, even with 15kg Bruno lying on his bed, it doesn’t sag too much. This dog bed is aesthetically pleasing, the colour of it matches my couches and suits my decor.

Similar to the Kmart water resistant dog bed, this dog bed has a removable cover which can easily be washed. Bruno seemed to really like his bed, however when Soda tested it out, I think it bought back memories of her Kmart round dog bed, and she dug for her life! Her claws unfortunately pulled out a few stitches which I had to sew up, so I don’t think I’d buy this bed for my girls in the future - Soda needs more robust material. I also wonder if you had a larger dog, say 20kg+ if the middle of the dog bed would sag under the weight.

Kmart elevated dog bed

My parents found a Kmart elevated dog bed on the nature strip, which they brought home for my dogs to use when they visit.

There’s many reasons why you might consider an elevated bed instead of a soft bed. They’re really easy to clean, you can simply hose them down when they’re dirty. And if your dog sheds, the fur can fall through the mesh of the bed and be swept away. Where as if you have a soft bed, the fur clings to the bedding and will eventually end up in the washing machine and sticking to your clothes.

The taught material can be ideal for senior dogs or those with joint problems. Their design can keep your dog cooler during summer by allowing air to circulate underneath them. And if your dog tears apart soft beds and eats the stuffing, an elevated dog bed can solve this problem.

Soda and Poppy don’t mind sleeping on the elevated dog bed at Mum and Dad’s. To me they look a bit uncomfortable because the material is so taught, I think they prefer a soft bed, but they’re happy to lie on this bed or even just on the bricks in the sun when they’re outside.

If you are considering buying this bed, I did see a warning on the website about keeping the fabric away from fire or open flames, so keep that in mind.

Higher quality dog beds you might like to invest in

Trialling a few cheap Kmart dog beds will help you decide which type of bed best suits you and your dog. If you’re then interested in purchasing a better quality, longer lasting dog bed, you might like to invest in one of these brands.
