How to groom your Cavoodle’s face

Cavoodles, with their adorable teddy-bear faces and soft, curly coats, require regular grooming to stay looking their best. Keeping their face well-groomed not only keeps them looking cute and ensures they can see past their ever-growing fringe, but also prevents matting around sensitive areas.

Are you ready to tackle your Cavoodle’s grooming like a pro? Whether you have a Cavoodle, Moodle, Spoodle, Snoodle, Groodle, Labradoodle, Poodle, Cavvy, Maltese Shih Tzu (the list goes on!), this step-by-step guide will have your pup looking fabulous in no time.

How to groom your dog’s face

Step 1: Get prepped

Preparation is everything! Start by bathing and thoroughly drying your Cavoodle. Gently brush their coat to remove any tangles or mats using a slicker brush. If needed, a de-matting tool can help tackle tougher knots.

Step 2: Shape the top of the head

Brush the fur on top of your Cavoodle’s head forward, over their eyes. Using clippers with a guard, glide them over the top of the head and then down the sides of the face. For that signature teddy-bear look, use a longer clipper guard than what you’ve used for the body to give the head a soft, fluffy finish.

Step 3: Trim the face

  • Ears: Brush both the outer and inner ear fur. With curved scissors, trim along the natural shape of the ears while holding the ear leather securely with your fingers to avoid accidentally cutting it.

  • Muzzle: Trim the sides of the muzzle in a curved shape, from the corner of the mouth to the corner of the ear, to maintain that classic Cavoodle look. Trim the fur underneath the muzzle, then use thinning shears to blend and soften any blunt scissor lines.

Tips for Success

  • Take your time and trim slowly, especially around sensitive areas like the eyes and mouth.

  • Use straight scissors with a rounded tip when trimming around the eyes.

  • Reward your dog with treats to keep them relaxed and happy during grooming.

  • Don’t stress if you make a mistake or trim too short—fur grows back quickly!

  • If you’re unsure or nervous, book a professional grooming session to keep your pup looking their best.
